Since the main focus of the novel is how Morgan deals with Jimmy's death, the author gives us the background information we need to understand how close Morgan and Jimmy were so we can understand the depths of Morgan's grief when she loses Jimmy. They are raised together and are as close as a brother and sister. Morgan wants to be an actress, while Jimmy aspires to be a dancer. They are taken by their mothers to auditions and workshops. Morgan depends on Jimmy for emotional support and is jealous when he flirts with other girls. Her jealousy isn't sexual, however, since their relationship is more of a sister/brother one. The two young people haven't made friends with anybody else because they both think all they need is each other to get through life.
