When Mitch Albom visits Morrie for the fourteenth Tuesday, his former teacher's strength is fading quickly. Mitch doesn't stay long but provides some physical comfort to Morrie by holding his hand and affectionately kissing his cheek.

Morrie slips into a coma two days later. His family takes shifts staying with Morrie, providing constant attention to the man they love. That Saturday, when everyone leaves his room for a moment, Morrie stops breathing and dies. The funeral service is kept intentionally small, and his brother shovels dirt into Morrie's grave. When Mitch looks at his watch, he realizes that it is Tuesday.

Mitch Albom adds a conclusion that explains that he and Morrie had always planned to publish the topics of their Tuesday conversations. The money from the book sales had helped to pay Morrie's enormous medical expenses. Because of all he'd learned from Morrie, Mitch had also reached out to his brother Peter, who lives in Spain, and asked to be part of his life. He told his brother that he loves him, which he had never done before. A few days later, Mitch received a fax from his brother with a few life updates and filled with humor that made Mitch laugh until he cried.

Mitch believes that the powerful life lessons that Morrie shared with him continue to shape lives through the book they wrote together.
