Christopher’s compelling and surprising novel keeps readers engaged until the very end, wondering the fate of both Gemma and Ty.

When Ty kidnaps Gemma, she is afraid of him and what he might do. As he takes her to an isolated area in Australia, readers anticipate turmoil and possible death for Gemma. There are points in the novel where readers might think that Gemma will successfully escape Ty’s hold. However, as time goes on, observe how Gemma begins to see Ty in a new light as Ty reveals many events in his life that have profoundly affected him. This will impact Gemma’s decision at the end of the novel.

In an intriguing twist, Christopher develops a relationship between Ty and Gemma that dates back to their youth. When Gemma learns that Ty has been keeping track of her since she was very young, she is both frightened and intrigued. Then, at the end of the novel, when Gemma is bitten by a snake, she sees that Ty risks it all for her wellbeing.

As Gemma is becoming ill from the snakebite, Ty realizes that he must take her somewhere to receive medical help to save her life. Note that he also knows that if he goes with her, his time with her will end because people will find out the truth. Ty decides to fly with her to get medicine, and he turns himself in to the police after they land.

When Gemma attends Ty’s court hearing, consider how she is torn by her emotions of relief to be back with her family and her growing compassion for Ty. She even feels close to him. However, instead of protecting Ty by lying (stating that they planned to run away together), consider why Gemma chooses to tell the truth of what happened. She knows he will go to prison, but it is also clear that Gemma cares for Ty. She hopes he can become the good man she believes he really is and be at peace. Also, note what she did in her dream to symbolize the end of her time with him.
