In 1979, Iranian revolutionaries took American embassy personnel hostage in the Iranian capital of Teheran. The American hostages in Iran had been held for over a year at the time that Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the president of the US. The Iranians, by that time, had come to hate Jimmy Carter and did not want to release the hostages while he was president.
