The novel The Black Arrow by Robert Louis Stevenson is an adventure, romance, and mystery all rolled up into historical fiction. The story is set in England during the 15th century in the time of the Wars of the Roses.
The main character, Dick Shelton, is setting off to battle when one of his archers is shot through the heart with a black arrow. A note on the arrow states that four men will die with a black arrow through their hearts: Dick's guardian and three of his friends. Sir Daniel Brackley (Dick's guardian) makes Dick return to defend the castle. Before he leaves, he helps a young boy by the name of John escape from Sir Daniel. Little does Dick know, John is really Joanna... a girl who Sir Daniel kidnapped and was going to force to marry Dick!
