Since the chapters in A Boy at War are very short, this is a summary of the last two chapters of the novel: chapter 22 and chapter 23.

In chapter 22, Adam and his mother are waiting to hear news about Adam's father. After a while, Adam decides that "anything would be better than this waiting and uncertainty" and he leaves his home to go to the harbor to find out about his father for himself. Unfortunately, the guards won't let him in. After spending the whole day there, he gives up and goes home.

In the final chapter, Adam and his mother receive a telegram from the navy. It states:

The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your husband LT Emory J Pelko has been missing in action at Pearl Harbor since 7 December 41.

The only phrase Adam's mother can concentrate on is "missing in action." The phrase gives her hope that he is still alive. Adam knows different. Having seen the bodies floating in the harbor, soon after the bombing, "he knew. There was no hope."
