In Chapter 7 of “The Outsiders”, Pony, Darry, and Sodapop are in the hospital waiting to find out the conditions of their friends – Johnny and Dally – who have been hurt when they rescued the children from the burning church.  They find out that Dally is fine but that Johnny is seriously injured and might not survive.  The next day, Ponyboy reads about himself in the newspaper; the paper says that he is a hero but that he runs the risk of being taken away from his brothers.  The final important event that occurs in this chapter is the conversation that occurs between Ponyboy and Randy (the Soc).  Randy tells Ponyboy that he never realized that a greaser could or would do what he did and from this conversation, Ponyboy comes to the realization that Socs are not as tough and untouchable as they seem to be.

In Chapter 8 Pony and Two-bit go to the hospital to see Johnny and Dally; while there they run into Johnny’s mother who is not very nice to them and Johnny does not want to see her.  After this, they run into Cherry and she has a conversation with Pony about Bob and Johnny.  Ponyboy wants her to visit Johnny in the hospital but she says that she cannot because he killed Bob.  The conversation makes Pony again realize just how similar the greasers and the socs really are.
