In the book Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, Maniac Magee ends up staying with Grayson, a has-been minor league baseball player, in the equipment room of the park. Grayson feeds Maniac with fast food and treats. He allows him to sleep in the equipment room while beguiling him with tales of his less than glorious days as minor leaguer. Maniac is so enamored with the stories that he follows Grayson around and helps him with his work around the park, such as fixing the fence around the kiddie zoo. When the park superintendent asks Grayson who the boy is, Grayson explains that Maniac is his nephew who is visiting him. The superintendent’s only response is to tell Grayson that the park cannot pay Maniac while he is there. After Grayson agrees, the park superintendent leaves and goes on about his business.
