What is a good, strong thesis statement for an essay on the Republic of Love by Carol Shields?
Your thesis statement is going to depend on what direction your essay takes. First of all, unless your teacher has assigned a particular type of essay, you need to decide what type to write. Are you writing an expository essay, in which you will explain or describe the story or the characters? Are you writing a persuasive essay, taking a particular stance and defending it? Are you writing a comparison/contrast essay, comparing this story or the characters to another story?
Once you've settled on the type of essay, then you can work on your thesis statement. For instance, let's say your topic is "how 'The Republic of Love' is an unlikely romance." You'll need to give examples of how Tom and Fay seem mismatched, and you might use something like "In this story, Tom Avery and Fay McLeod are the unlikeliest of lovers."
That's not a particularly strong thesis statement, but I hope it helps you to compose your own.
