A very interesting topic within social sciences is "social identity." It describes the process through which individuals acquire their identity. For example, there is the case of "us versus them." We often form our identity based on what we are not. We study other social groups to understand our social group and who we are.

Also, people have multiple social identities. For example, you may be a daughter, a soccer player, an American, and a fan of a rock band. You don't have to pick and choose one; they are all different identities that you have.

Throughout our life our identities can change and transform as we also change. For example, in twenty years you may no longer be a fan of the rock band you like now. You may have additional identities, like mother, wife, etc.

This is a very interesting concept that would make a great idea for a research paper. There are many books and papers on social identity theory that you can easily locate at your school and public library, for example, Social Identity and Conflict by Karina Korostelina. This book goes a bit further and talks about how our identity plays a role in conflict between different social groups.

The field of social sciences is quite broad. It is the trunk of a tree with many branches. Each branch stems out a separate way. If you are looking for ideas for a research paper on social sciences, try to choose a topic that categorizes the main ideas of a certain branch. Branches include:

- anthropology: study of human culture and relationships in the past

- archaeology: similar to previous but has a main focus of excavating and studying the remains through science

- law: study and enforcement of rules that govern society

- political science: NOT the same as law - study of systems of governing and their effects in the past and present

- sociology: study of human interactions, behavior

- history: self-explanatory

- psychology: study of the mind and its function

- economics: understanding the flow of money

I suggest starting by narrowing down into a specific field of social science. From there you can narrow down even further by choosing something within that field that interested you and really delve into it. For example, you could choose psychology. From there you could choose a very, very wide range of topics. Suppose you are interested in child psychology. Then you could choose different things such as disorders, child development, etc. The good (and bad) thing about writing about social science is that there are so many different fields and topics to choose from that while you can pick your absolute favorite, you really need to narrow it down quite far in order to get a great paper. To help get you started, here are a few of the different fields in social science that you can look into:

  • Anthropology
  • Psychology
  • Criminology
  • Communications
  • Sociology
  • Economics

Hope this helps! And good luck.
