What gifts did Emily purchase for Homer Barron?

Miss Emily purchases some rather intimate gifts for Homer Barron that a wife might purchase for a husband. She buys him a silver toiletry set, engraved with his initials, as well as a full set of clothing, including what he would wear to bed. These items lead people in town to believe that the couple will very soon be married if they are not already.

Miss Emily Grierson does purchase a number of expensive gifts for Homer Barron, and these gifts lead people in the town to believe that they are going to be married or even that they already are. Miss Emily goes to the jeweler's to order a "man's toilet set in silver." This would likely have included items that a man might use to complete his "toilet," or items that we might refer to as toiletries, including a mirror, brush, and comb—all of which she has engraved with Homer Barron's initials.

Next, she purchases a complete set of men's clothing, including a nightshirt, which is like a nightgown for a man to sleep in. In other words, she buys a number of very intimate gifts for him—gifts that imply that their relationship has or will soon progress to the level of marriage. After Miss Emily gets rid of her snobby cousins—who are "even more Grierson than [she] had ever been"—Homer Barron returns to her home one night, is admitted by her servant, and then is never seen or heard from again. People in town, of course, assume that he has left her, and they certainly do not guess the strange and grim truth: that she has murdered him and is keeping his body in her bed.
