Genre refers to the category into which a book can be classified.  This book would first be listed as "young adult literature".  The reading level is for later grade school readers, such as 6th grade. 

Although there might be some disagreement about this heading, the book can also be classified as historical fiction.  Although it does not dramatize a particular event, the novel does pay particular attention to the accuracy of the time period.  Setting, character development, and atmosphere are created to accurately recreate the situation of Vietnamese families during the turbulent times of the mid-1900s.
