A genetic mutation is a mutation that has permanently changed the DNA sequence. Genetic mutations occur in a couple of different ways. One way that they occur is by the transfer of the mutation from parent to offspring. These are called germline mutations, or hereditary mutations. These occur in the sperm and egg cells of the individual. Mutations that occur during an individuals lifetime are called acquired mutations. These kinds of mutations may have occurred because of the environment or perhaps too much exposure to the sun which can cause skin cancer.

Viral mutations do occur and if the virus has the ability to change their RNA sequence quickly, they have the potential to make us very sick as we have no immunity to this mutated virus.

A genetic mutation is a change in the DNA of a gene.  Gene mutations can occur in two ways.  They can be inherited from a parent or caused by outside influences. An example of a gene mutation passed down from a parent is hemophilia.  Outside influences that can result in genetic mutations are viruses, radiation, and toxins.  Some examples of mutations from outside influences are lung cancer caused by cigarettes or asbestos exposure and skin cancer caused by too much sun exposure.  Genetic mutation has been valuable and detrimental to the evolution of living things.  If you are a believer in Darwin's theory of evolution, we evolved from tiny microorganisms, into what we are today due to genetic mutations.

Genetic mutation refers to change in the nature of genes present in cells of all living organisms, and which constitute the basic unit of heredity of these organisms. Such mutations can take place due to external causes such as radiations, viruses and mutagenic chemicals. Some genetic mutations may also result from errors that occur during DNA replication.

Organisms have a built in mechanism to eliminate cells with genetic mutation from the body. However there is a limitation to this capabilities. As a result mutation may result in abnormal growth of  ells with mutation causing cancer.

Also mutation on cells involved in reproduction may result in genetic defects in offspring and the defects being passed on to heredity.

Viral mutations refer do genetic mutations that occur in viruses causing new strains of viruses being developed as a result of the mutations being passed on to heredity. Frequently, such new strains disease causing viruses pose great health hazard as human have no immunity to such new strains of viruses. Also the existing antibiotic drugs may bot be very effective in treating diseases caused by them.
