A genetic mutation is a mutation that has permanently changed the DNA sequence. Genetic mutations occur in a couple of different ways. One way that they occur is by the transfer of the mutation from parent to offspring. These are called germline mutations, or hereditary mutations. These occur in the sperm and egg cells of the individual. Mutations that occur during an individuals lifetime are called acquired mutations. These kinds of mutations may have occurred because of the environment or perhaps too much exposure to the sun which can cause skin cancer.
Viral mutations do occur and if the virus has the ability to change their RNA sequence quickly, they have the potential to make us very sick as we have no immunity to this mutated virus.
