Marquez writes in what is known as "magical realism." In this genre, the unexpected fantastic explodes into daily life, but without rational explanation or even a clear connection to existing reality. This can be seen in the way the details of the man's enormous wings are simply dropped into the end of the first paragraph. It can also be seen in the nature of the seemingly random miracles that happen to people who see this "angel." His style could be called understated, because he does not make a big deal of these amazing events, or even casual. It is definitely ironic, given the flat tone with which he treats the priest's silly questions.
