An event that is significantly similar to the book To Kill a Mockingbird is the OJ Simpson trial. 

One reason the two events are similar is the issue of race.  Simpson was a black man accused of killing his white wife.  Although stardom was an issue, since Simpson was a famous football player, race was also a hotly contested issue during the trial.  Some people were angry that Simpson was acquitted.  This is similar to the Tom Robinson trial because race was also more of an issue than it should have been.
