Diamond’s book is meant to answer a simple question put to him by a politician from Papua New Guinea: given than Europeans and New Guineans are equally smart, why is it that Europeans have so much more stuff? Diamond’s answer avoids the commonplace assertions about culture or race (for instance, that science did not rise in China because Confucianism did not value scientific inquiry) and instead focuses on geography and environment as determining factors.

Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel takes an in-depth look at factors that, throughout the rise of modern civilization, have determined which parts of the world have become the most modernized and successful, and which parts of the world have been passed by. Diamond hypothesizes that there are three major factors that separate   developed nations and developing nations - summarized as "guns, germs, and steel."

Guns, and other types of advanced weaponry, made it possible for modern powers to control vast areas of the world - especially against civilizations that did not have access to such weaponry. Examples of this would include European colonization of the African and American continents.

Germs, or rather the resistance to germs, helped Europeans colonize the rest of the world. Civilizations that did not have any exposure to ailments that Europeans brought along with them on their conquests fought a two-fronted battle - a battle against the invaders and their advanced weaponry, as well as against diseases that decimated their populations. An example of this would be the exposure of smallpox to Native American populations, which Europeans eventually began to use as a biological weapon against indigenous peoples.

Steel, which can be simplified as advanced industrial capability, is the third factor described in Guns, Germs, and Steel. Diamond explains that when societies have the capability to move past primitive methods and materials of building shelters, tools, weapons, defenses, and other societal needs that they have the ability to rapidly advance as a society. European nations were the first to advance to building with steel, which gave them a distinct advantage over the rest of the world.
