There are as many factors influencing the choice of assessment tasks as there are teachers.  The notion that any assessment is strictly objective is nonsense.  The teacher, instructor, educator chooses questions (or tasks) based on the presumption that something has been learned, and assessment is used to try to determine if that is in fact true.  Some assessments are designed for political or social reasons, some are designed to measure retention span. Some are designed to lay a foundation for further study.  Some are designed to humble the test takers. Some might use instruments designed to demonstrate aptitude for a particular skill. As a teacher, I found the whole subject of assessment practicality, relevance and implementation very fascinating.
