Examples of civilization are that Huck and Jim are only truly free when they are on the raft, away from society and its rules.  Huck thinks he will go to hell for helping Jim escape, since in society's eyes it is a horrible thing to do.

Examples of religion are how the "good Christians" described in the book all own slaves.  The Sheperdsons and Grangerfords are civil to one another only while inside the church building, although they carry their guns anyway.
