The focal romance in "A Very Old man with Enormous Wings" is the love between man and wife, Pelayo and Elisenda. When the story opens Pelayo and Elisenda have a newborn baby, the emblem of their romantic love and deep commitment to building a life together. After they earn so much money from the admissions to see the very old man with enormous wings who is said to be an angel, they plan and build a mansion of a house together, symbolizing a continuance of their love--although they want no more visiting angels and so put bars on the windows.
