Epithelial cells consists of closely-packed cells that form a continuous layer covering the surface of organs or lining the cavities of the overy. Since the cells are closely packed there is very little space between them; the absence of inter cellular space is characteristic of epithelial tissues. The cells in this tissue remain attached to the basement membrane that separates it from the other tissues that lie beneath. Though the primary function of the epithelium is protection, it may be sensory or may be concerned with absorption, secretion, or reproduction. Epithelia are many types depending on the shape and arrangement of the cells.
