Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand both our own emotions and those of other people.  When we have emotional intelligence, we are adept at realizing what emotions we and other people are feeling and we are capable of acting in ways that are appropriate given those emotional states.  We are able to act in ways that use our emotions constructively or in ways that move our own emotions or those of others towards a state that is more beneficial to us and them.  We often think of emotional intelligence as "people skills" because emotional intelligence is tremendously helpful in terms of our ability to interact successfully with other people in a broad range of settings and situations.
