Although people tend to think of things such as gold and platinum as expensive, some of the radioactive elements only exist when artificially created.  As such, they are extremely expensive to produce.  One of the current record holders is californium-252, which cost the equivalent of 350 billion dollars per pound to produce (though only a VERY tiny percentage of that was created.)
