The reason most literature is the same in high schools across the country today is because it contains universal human themes that still apply to individuals and and society today. Therefore, these questions can be answered by considering the events that unfolded in The Crucible as hypotheticals in society today.

Examine the dynamics of your community (home, street, school, town, etc.) today. Imagine if people began a feverish search in your community for something that did not exist and then persecuted others based on little to no evidence other than word of mouth and general suspicion. If convicted, that person would be sentenced to a public, often graphic death.

The widespread distrust and paranoia that would ensue would completely destroy the community by dismantling any elements that previously bonded it.
