Humans need many resources from Earth in order to survive. This varies depending on what country a person lives in and on their way of life. However, an ecological footprint is the effect humans have on the ecosystems that are providing what is needed for their survival. Think about how much farmland is needed to provide food, along with the fish harvested from the marine environments. It also refers to the amount of waste produced by people and how quickly the Earth can recycle this material. The ecological footprint refers to how much people take and use of the resources of Earth and how much biocapacity there actually is on Earth. Unfortunately, we are using the resources faster than the Earth can recycle and renew them.
