The word probe can be used as both a noun and as a verb, carrying different meanings depending on how it is used.

An item called a probe can be used to explore or examine something else. Probes can be used to obtain data from places that are difficult to access for direct observation and analysis, including outer space, the depths of the oceans, inside the bodies of plants or animals, and so on. Probes may be used to investigate body cavities for injuries, deformities, or signs of illness.

As a verb, to probe is to conduct an examination of the item in question. Probing may involve inserting objects into the item to evaluate interior conditions. Probing may involve searching deeply for detailed information through asking questions, studying under a microscope, evaluating test results, and other techniques of close examination.
