Communication is so important to all humans. This is why so many people keep diaries and write their deepest, darkest secrets in them. We also write about our dreams and needs. By putting these things in writing, they are immortalized. We can go back to them at a later time and measure our progress in attaining our dreams or look back at that time with fond memories.

Consider how much we have learned from reading The Diary of Anne Frank. Her diary will always be a way for us to personally know what it was like for Jews in the Holocaust. It is because Anne put her thoughts, feelings, and dreams down in writing that we can know this. Writing in her diary was her only way to tell of her feelings while living in such cramped quarters, and they will be remembered forever.

This is why writing is so important to Pi. It gives him an outlet to express his fears and how his experience was affecting and changing him. This is why all of us as humans need and want to communicate.
