Apollo was the Roman sun god, derived from the Greek sun god. Apollo was generally considered the most beautiful of all the gods, as one might expect of a god of the sun. People have been referring to exceptionally handsome young men as Apollos and young Apollos for many years. A narcissistic person is a person who is in love with himself because he is so good-looking. Typically a narcissist will spend a lot of time admiring himself in a mirror. Many such narcissists are to be seen doing this in the present day. The word derives from Greek mythology. A young boy named Narcissus fell in love with his own image in a pool of water. The references to Dorian Gray should be obvious. Oscar Wilde was notoriously a great admirer of handsome young males.
