The orchid in Chinese symbolism is usually associated with fertility and children, so it could be that. Also, since the family is away from their native china, it could be that the name symbolized China and the exotic world they left behind.

In one specific case, the name Moon Orchid symbolizes something which does not exist, and that is also somewhat true of the character, who ends up locked away in an asylum.
