The "demons" that's are commonly mentioned in several passages of the story refer specifically to white Americans. Indeed, the terms "demons" and "white demons" are often interchangeable. America is called "The Land of the Golden Mountain," the mountain itself being San Francisco. This name came from exaggerated tales of a mountain made of gold that, when warmed by the sun, could be scooped into buckets by anyone willing to work.
