In Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis, Bud Caldwell meets a man called Lefty Lewis, while he is going to Grand Rapids on foot. Lefty initiates a conversation with Bud and offers him a ride in his car, which he accepts. But just when he is about to join him, he sees a box with “URGENT: CONTAINS HUMAN BLOOD” written on its side, and this freaks him out. Bud is a young kid who believes in ghosts, vampires and the like. He is afraid that they are always around. According to him, “The only kind of people who would carry human blood around in a car were vampires!”. So he thinks that Lefty Lewis is actually a vampire. Hence, as soon as he gets inside the car, he steals it and tries to drive it off to escape the trouble. This turns out to be a mistake, as he doesn’t actually know how to drive a car. Lefty runs really hard and catches him.
