What do you usually do in your free time?

Educators at eNotes enjoy a wide variety of activities in their free time, from reading Shakespeare to biking to traveling. Some, however, wish they could break dishes.

Free time? What’s that!? Joking aside, I do have some free time despite a busy work week. Virtually all of my free time is given to my wife and two young boys. It really is inexplicably relieving and magical to hear my boys laugh and play after a long day of editing and writing. In the brief windows of time that exist outside of “family time,” I enjoy following Cleveland sports, endeavoring for a new high score in old arcade games, and reading all sorts of books. I never had the chance to read Shakespeare in high school or college, except Julius Caesar, so I’m playing “catch-up” now. If I have any TV time, it’s The Walking Dead or re-watching The Office with my wife, and in the blue-moon opportunity of solo Netflix time, I’m watching Star Trek: Enterprise and attempting to eventually watch every episode of every series.

As a freelance artist and writer, I don't have a whole lot of free time. Most of my day is spent trying to find ways to get paid. I don't mind so much--I really enjoy writing, and spending time in my art studio is always fun. (I don't take commissions at this point, because I know that it's a lot less fun when I have to create someone else's ideas instead of my own.)

I like to read and study. I'm teaching myself to cook all of my favorite foods, I enjoy discovering new cuisine. I'm a fan of linguistics and esoterica, too, and have been working on developing a new system of symbolism for divination and timekeeping. I build websites...I'm a horror photography model...I practice Latin (after spending three years studying it at the University, I don't want to forget anything)...play with my pets (I have a cat, a snake, and two tarantulas)...and when I really don't feel like doing anything productive, I'll binge on horror movies and British comedy shows.

So far there have been eleven answers to the question, "What do you usually do in your free time?" and none of the answers, strangely enough, contains the word "television." I have read somewhere that Americans spend an average of six hours a day watching television. I like to watch professional football on television, but otherwise I avoid it because of all those insane commercials. I subscribe to Netflix and try to have something to watch every night from around five to around eight or night, the only hours I really consider my spare time. I watch highbrow dramatic stuff and lowbrow thrillers and documentaries. Sometimes I don't want to be edified but just to wallow in mindless chewing gum for the eyes. I often watch favorite movies over and over again. If I'm doing anything constructive, I don't consider that really spare time.

I love to travel and have been a long-time collector (stamps, baseball cards, records, CDs, antiques) for many years, so I like to combine these two interests whenever possible. I also love to read and swim, and I can also be found attending sporting events whenever possible.

What free time? As a teacher, student, mother, and wife, I have little free time. In all honesty, I spend much of my free time on eNotes. As a self proclaimed nerd (see name), I find it relaxing to read, research, and help students with questions about literature. Outside of that, my free time is spent surrounded by my family watching movies and enjoying time spent together.

In my free time, I like to read. I have also recently taken up bike riding.  I certainly do enjoy going out, either shopping or just hanging out, with friends.

When you ask about this, it reminds me of an old record I had where Alvin and the Chipmunks have to tell what they like to do with their spare time.  They end up singing about liking to break dishes and fight with squirrels and stuff.  Sometimes, I would really like to break dishes myself...

Sorry... In real life, my favorite thing to do in my spare time is to read.  I used to like to play all sorts of sports (particularly basketball, volleyball, and tennis) but I am no longer able to do that because my knees will not let me.  Also, if this is considered something that one does in one's spare time (rather than part of work) I like to do things with my kids -- playing games with them and doing things like that.
