One of the first guns that was considered a "machine gun" was a collection of six barrels that would be rotated around a central axis with a hammer being dropped each time the barrel was in line, firing one round at a time.  The "gatling gun" was hand-cranked and the parts were made with steel and other metals and alloys.

The first real machine gun that used the gas from the firing of a projectile to cycle the weapon and load the next round was the "Maxim gun" developed by the British inventor Sir Hiram Maxim.  Its construction was similar, though slightly more complex, and it allowed a gunner to simply depress the trigger and the cycling of the weapon was fully automatic.
