Simon, Piggy, and Ralph are the only ones in the book who attempt to wrap their minds around the idea of the goodness of mankind.  They are young and inexperienced, and the dark side of the humanity is more prevalent and more entertaining.  Therefore, the kiddos who stand in the way of this fun and rampant spreading of the darkness are one by one murdered.  Ralph only escapes this through the irony of the fire on the island, meant to smoke him out as they have done the pigs during hunting expeditions.
