There are many challenges that will face police officers in this century.  Among them are:

  • Relationships with minority communities.  These have been problematic for decades and the problems will continue as long as officers are seen as the representatives of a legal system that is unfair to minorities.  This may even get worse if local police officers are expected to carry out immigration laws.  This may lead to extreme tensions between them and Hispanic communities in particular.
  • Possible increasing violence by drug dealers.  We are seeing tremendous violence by drug cartels in Mexico.  It is possible that this will make its way to the United States.

I do not see any real challenges to police officers that are completely new to the 21st century.  The challenges are more just the continuation of problems that have long been present.
