Several genres of music are associated with African-American culture. The first major genre is the spiritual, a type of religious music that fuses African rhythms and African American themes with the hymn genre; many date back to the 19th century and are still an important component of the African-American religious and musical heritage. The next important African-American genre is the blues, which originated in the south, and is often associated with New Orleans. It derived from work songs and spirituals, and usually has narrative themes and repetitions and call and response forms.Other distinctively African-American musical forms are jazz, Motown, and "soul" music.
