In Fritz's fictional account of her own childhood in Homesick: My Own Story, Lin Nai-Nai is Jean Guttery's Chinese maid. Jean, the narrator, is an only child and lives with her American mother and father in Hankow in China. Her father is a director for the YMCA and her mother works as an English teacher for the YMCA.

It is not clear what Lin's brothers do; she says she has disgraced her family by leaving her husband and hasn't seen her family since. She thinks she will never see them again. She has two brothers and two sisters and presumes that they are now married. However, she is worried about them because the city they come from, Wuchang, has been taken over by the communists.
