Always the sea is a formidable force of nature, and man cannot overpower it. Gales and such disasters are not to be ignored as a threat to being on ships. Added to this, after having read such books as "Moby Dick," for instance, one marvels at the aplomb and fortitude of whalers. Even the sailors in novels such as "The Count of Monte Cristo" in which the men were away for years at a time, and the owner of the ships did lose some at sea. In recent times, the tale of Captain Richard Phillips who was held captive by Somalian pirates for five days when his ship was boarded by these pirates at sea. It was only when the U.S. Navy Seals arrived, that Captain Phillips was rescued. So, there is always danger that accompanies the thrill of travel and adventure and gain.
