What sinners are there ? In general, what is the sin? If there are famous sinners name them and briefly give their story.
Dante and Roman poet Virgil travel to hell. There are 9 circles of hell in Dante's vision. As they travel deeper and deeper the circles become more intense. The first circle is called Limbo. Here are the people that were virtuous in life, but were not Christians. There are also unbaptized pagans. This circle is the less of all the others. Here Dante sees Homer, Socrates and Aristotle. All are known for their great works in philosophy, but not for being Christians.
The second circle is Lust. Here are the people overcome with lust in their earthly lives. Here they see Cleopatra, Tristan and Helen of Troy. These three are known in life as great lovers, but also ruled by their flesh. The third circle is Gluttony. Here people that lived their in selfishness and coldness, have to live in a slimy mess. The fourth circle is Greed. Dante sees many clergyman including cardinals and popes. The fifth circle is Anger. Here is shown Flippo Argenti a great Florentine politician. The sixth circle is Heresy. Dante sees the great Greek philosopher Epicurs and Pope Anastacius II. The seventh circle is Violence. Here they see Alexander the Great. The eighth circle is Fraud. The ninth and final circle of hell is Treachery. In this final circle there are four rounds named for the person who personifies each one. The first round is named Caina after Cain in the bible who killed his brother, Abel. The second round is named for Antenora after Anthenor of Troy, who was Priam's counselor during the Trojan War. The third round is named for Ptolomaea after Ptolemy, son of Abubus. The fourth and final round is named Judecca after Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
Dante writes a clear message to the people he thinks deserve this kind of punishment. We have to ask ourselves, is he right?
