In the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" Scout and Jem live with their father Atticus.  They do not have a mother because she died.  Jem had known her, but Scout had not known her.  They also have a housekeeper named Calpurnia.  They live in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama.  Atticus is a lawyer.  Calpurnia and Scout tend to argue, but Calpurnia always wins.  The town does not have much for entertainment, not even a movie theater.

Dill is from Meridian, Mississippi.  He has gone to Maycomb to spend the summer with his aunt.  His aunt's name is Miss Rachel and it is the intent that he will be spending the rest of his summers with her.  Dill's family originally had been from Maycomb, but his mother was employed in Meridian.  She works for a photographer.  Dills hometown has a movie theater.
