Tropism is a term usually associated with different factors that affect the growth of plants.  In particular, it refers to a specific type of stimulus that will alter the direction of growth of a plant.  There are numerous different types of tropism as shown below.

Chemotropism: directed growth according to chemicals.

Geotropism: directed growth according to the influence of gravity.

Heliotropism: directed growth according to the direction of sunlight.

Hydrotropism: directed growth according to the availability of water.

Thermotropism: directed growth according to temperature (specifically heat).

Sonotropism: directed growth according to sound.

Electrotropism: directed growth according to an electric field.

Thigmotropism: directed growth according to physical contact.
