In Everyday Use, are the differences between the sisters clear from the beginning of the story?

Yes. Dee and Maggie are very different from the start of the story. Maggie is shuffling in the yard timidly awaiting her sister's return. She is timid,  and afraid of confrontation.

Dee has always been outspoken and demanding. Their mother is aware of the way Dee always runs over Maggie's wishes, and that Maggie always just gives in to Dee.
