The differences between men’s and women’s clothing is not nearly as great as it once was in our society. However, there are still many ways in which men’s clothing and women’s clothing differs. A general way to put this difference is to say that women’s clothing is meant much more for display and personal expression while men’s clothing tends to be somewhat more uniform and utilitarian.
Men’s and women’s clothing does not differ as much as it once did. This is seen largely in the fact that women now wear pants. Essentially, there is no type of clothing that men are allowed to wear that women are not.
That said, women and men definitely still dress differently. Women wear clothes that are meant to make personal statements. Their clothes are meant to draw attention to the wearer in ways that men’s clothes are not. Women can wear much brighter colors than men are able to wear. Women tend to wear a greater variety of styles with different skirt lengths (when they wear skirts or dresses) and different necklines. Men wear much more uniform clothing (long pants, jackets and ties) than women do. Shoes are another source of great difference between men’s and women’s fashion as women wear shoes that are meant to be much more conspicuous than men’s shoes.
Thus, while women and men no longer differ as much as they once did in terms of fashion, there are still important differences that are based on societal views of the roles of men and women.
