The difference between these two kinds of status is that one is assigned without regard to anything that the person has actually done. It is based on characteristics that are completely out of the person's control. The other is based on things the person has actually done.
A person who is born into a wealthy family had no part in making the family wealthy, but is given a high status (an ascribed status) on the basis of his or her birth. A person born into an ethnic group that is low-status is given a low (ascribed) status without having done anything to deserve it.
A person who is born poor but has become rich through hard work also has high status in our society. The difference is that this status depends what he or she has done. Therefore, it is an achieved status.
