In chapter 7, the BFG carries Sophie to the entrance of the cave, where a huge boulder blocks the way in or out. The BFG rolls the boulder to one side, and, with Sophie sitting in his hand, invites her to look outside.

When Sophie looks outside of the cave, she sees the sun shining "fiery-hot" over a "great yellow wasteland." At first, the wasteland seems to be populated only with "blue rocks and dead trees." There doesn't appear to be any life or any capacity for life to thrive. However, "squinting through the glare of the sun," Sophie starts to discern the shapes of "several tremendous tall figures moving among the rocks" and several other figures "sitting quite motionless on the rocks themselves." The BFG explains to Sophie that what she sees is "Giant Country," and that the tall figures are in fact giants "at least fifty feet tall."

Once her eyes become accustomed to the glare of the sun, Sophie sees that the giants are all naked, "except for a sort of short skirt around their waists." She also sees that they all have skin "burnt brown" by the sun. They appear to resemble, in terms of their appearance, primitive cavemen. Sophie also now begins to appreciate just how big the figures are. She describes them as "colossal" and much bigger than even the BFG.

The BFG explains to Sophie that when night comes, all of the giants travel to "places where people is living," to eat those people for their supper. Sophie, of course, recoils in horror and asks the BFG to take her back inside the cave, away from the horrible sight of the man-eating giants.
