Sarah missed several things about Maine. During a conversation she has with Maggie during their visit, Sarah reveals amid tears that she misses the sea. She loved the sea and perhaps that is the reason she brought shells along with her so that she could listen to the sea sound they make. In fact, she drove the wagon to town and purchased three colored pencils for Anna so that she could complete the drawing that lacked something. The three colors, blue, green and gray were the colors of the ocean. Sarah also misses her brother and the house she lived in, although she admits that it now belongs to her brother’s wife. She also misses her three old aunts even though they make shrill noises each dawn.
