In S. E. Hinton's popular juvenile novelThe Outsiders, Ponyboy and Cherry have long conversation while they are at the movies getting popcorn. This is there first meeting and it begins a path neither of them ever would have suspected. They talk about Johnny and Ponyboy tells her about how he was jumped by a group of Socs who beat him up really badly. One of the guys had rings on his fingers and Johnny has never really recovered from the beating he took. It is later revealed that Cherry knew who it was with "the rings". It was her boyfriend Bob, who later is killed by Johnny to save Ponyboy.
