The story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" opens in an unnamed coastal town after a long rainstorm. Pelayo and Elisenda are dismayed because crabs have been washed up from the ocean into their house and all over their farm yard. The crabs are making an odor that Pelayo finds most unpleasant. It is this odor from the crabs that Pelayo thinks is affecting their newborn baby. Pelayo starts immediately to collect and dispose of the dead crabs. While doing so, he discovers the other thing that washed up into their yard with the rainstorm...the angel man with the enormous wings.
