With the war fast approaching Vicksburg, Rosemary, the main character, works with Amanda to fix up the cellar of the huge estate where she is living now that shelling has destroyed her old home. The cellar is filthy and filled with cobwebs, but she works hard to make it into a decent living area, with the thought that it will be safer here than in the rooms above should "things get red hot" (Chapter "June 1862"). Once the cellar is ready, Amanda and Betsy will move in with Rosemary and Derry.
