When Mariam realizes that Rasheed intends to kill Laila, she decides to determine her own fate for the first time in her life. With the shovel in her hand, she uses all of the force in her body to use it as a weapon, hitting Rasheed in the head. This likely rescues Laila from an imminent death.

The two women must then decide quickly what to do with Rasheed's body, especially because they don't want young Zalmai to witness this horrific scene. They decide to wrap him in a sheet and remove him from their home. He is too heavy for the women to carry, so they must drag him out of the house and across the yard; his body gets hung up on the doorframe as they exit, which is an eerie reminder of Rasheed's refusal to allow the women to live peacefully. Mariam and Laila are finally able to drag his body across the yard and into the toolshed. They place him behind the workbench, which is covered with various tools and some wood; they realize that Rasheed was likely working on a project for Zalmai.

The women then return inside and wash up. They realize that they need to plan their next steps quickly and initially imagine a new and better environment for the children to grow up in since Rasheed is gone.
