After the defeat of Grendel's mother, Beowulf presented Hrothgar with Grendel's head and the hilt of the sword with which he killed Grendel's mother.

When Beowulf returned to his homeland in southern Sweden, he gave gifts to his king as well: a banner, helmet, armor and sword, along with four horses and a necklace for the queen.
